Early times
Life began with three daughters on a farm west of Edmonton in Wildwood, Alberta. Being the middle daughter, I became my father’s helper learning a variety of chores, including working with farm machinery. But I never mastered milking cows! Farm life was an early invitation to preparing for life’s work ethics.
Upon completion of high school, I briefly worked at an elite clothing store, Walk Rite Ltd., as a stenographer.
Marriage and real estate
After marrying Kenyon W. Johnston, I worked part time at a real estate office and noticed the two primary salespeople were earning decent family incomes. I suggested to Ken if they could achieve those earnings, I was positive he could even do better. And so real estate began in our home in 1963...
For 10 years I remained a stay at home mother of 3 sons: Dan, Wayne and Sheldon. Each one quickly learned the responsibility of answering telephones, and learned their father worked unpredictable hours in real estate. I enjoyed employment with the City of Edmonton Public School system as a kindergarten aide for a number of years. Throughout the years, myself and all three sons held a real estate license at one time or another.
During the summers we spent our holidays trailoring, and winters involved hockey with Ken coaching and myself privileged to drive children. Many games we "endured" the freezing cold outside arenas.
K.W. Johnston Real Estate and Coldwell Banker Johnston Real Estate
In 1975 Ken and I started K.W. Johnston Real Estate Ltd, and in 1993 franchised with Coldwell Banker. I have been the official Company administrator and anxiously embraced new challenges. Our Company has recently implemented a number of new computer applications: Lone Wolf Realty Management System, the Virtual Business Centre client/document storage and Coldwell Banker's CrestEdg system. It has been challenging but I always enjoy learning something new.
